Flagyl is a brand-name prescription antimicrobial used to treat bacterial infections of the heart, blood, nervous system, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, joints, bones, and skin. Extended-release metronidazole is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections such as trichomoniasis.
As an antimicrobial, Flagyl cannot be used to treat viral infections. If Flagyl is being used to treat a sexually transmitted infection (like trichomoniasis), both sex partners should use the medication simultaneously. This helps reduce the risk of reinfection in either partner. Antimicrobials stop the growth of harmful microorganisms in the body, so simultaneous use in both partners of metronidazole will help prevent the infection from living on and being passed between partners.
Flagyl is supplied as an oral tablet or extended-release capsule. It contains the drug metronidazole, which is available in generic form. Flagyl is only available via prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

Design:Clinical trial.
Setting:The study design was a single-center, open-label, multicentre, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, phase 3 study.
Subjects:Children aged 3 months and more than 6 months who were treated with metronidazole (Flagyl, Lomair) or doxycycline (Doxy, Mylanta, Mycobank) for at least 4 days for either bacterial or viral infection were included in this trial.
Intervention/treatment:Children were treated with metronidazole (Flagyl, Lomair) and doxycycline (Doxy, Mylanta, Mycobank) for 4 days, then metronidazole (Flagyl, Lomair) and doxycycline (Doxy, Mylanta, Mycobank) for a further 4 days, and metronidazole and doxycycline (Doxy, Mylanta, Mycobank) for a further 4 days.
Main outcome measure:Children were treated with metronidazole (Flagyl, Lomair) and doxycycline (Doxy, Mylanta, Mycobank) for 4 days and metronidazole and doxycycline (Doxy, Mylanta, Mycobank) for a further 4 days.
Dosing and adverse events:Children were observed on the first day and continued therapy for the rest of the treatment course.
Statistical analysis:The primary analysis was done with intention to treat; the secondary analysis with intention to inform. The secondary analysis was done with a logit model. The primary analysis was done with a mixed model, with a random effects model, and with the factors (age, gender, comorbidities, and severity of the infection) as covariates.
Results:Of the 595 children in this study, 149 (19.4%) metronidazole (Flagyl, Lomair) or doxycycline (Doxy, Mylanta, Mycobank) treatment was successful, and 546 (74.6%) were successfully treated with metronidazole and doxycycline (Doxy, Mylanta, Mycobank) treatment.
Conclusion:Of the 595 children with metronidazole treatment, 149 metronidazole treatment was successful and 546 metronidazole treatment was successful with doxycycline.
